Amahata Suzuri Houkendo Honpo
The inkstone, which is widely produced primarily in Fujikawa-cho, Yamanashi prefecture, is believed to have begun in the Genroku era (1688-1704) when a worshipper found a black stone on the banks of the Hayakawa River, a tributary of the Fujikawa River, and made an inkstone out of it.
The Amahata stone is known as the finest material for inkstones because of its excellent qualities. As a result of the ingenuity, effort, and diligence of many craftsmen, the Amahata inkstone has become a world-renowned inkstone.
The Amahata Suzuri Houkendo Honpo manufactures and sells Amahata inkstones made by Kenpo Amemiya, an inkstone craftsman who has been awarded as a “Contemporary Master Craftsman” by the government. We manufacture and sell Amahata inkstones that add new sensibilities to the traditional techniques cultivated over its three-hundred-year history.
