Gagaku Ensemble Minobusan University
Boasting a history of more than 1,200 years, Gagaku is highly regarded throughout the world as a type of Japanese classical music used for ancient Japanese Imperial court music and dances. Gagaku has long been closely associated with Buddhism, with dances and orchestral music being used in Buddhist memorial services.
Gagaku is practiced twice a month at Kuonji Temple, the head temple of Nichiren Buddhism, for students enrolled in their program under the guidance of three instructors. The Gagaku Ensemble performs at the Buddhist memorial service at Mt. Minobu.
The Gagaku ensemble of Minobu University offers a special tour where guests can enjoy a live performance. Embrace the traditional Japanese sounds that have been passed down since ancient times, along with an introduction to the deep history of Buddhism and Gagaku and a description of the traditional Japanese musical instruments used in the performance.
