Koshu Hand-Carved Seals by Koga Mochizuki

甲州手彫印章 望月煌雅

Mochizuki Koga is a traditional master craftsman of “Koshu Tebori Insho”, which are Koshu hand-engraved personal signature seals/stamps. He was born in Rokugo, Ichikawasango-cho, Yamanashi prefecture, the “home of the best Hanko (engraved personal seal/stamp)” in Japan. As the third generation in his family to run a seal engraving business, he takes orders for Koshu hand-carved seals, known as “Koga seals”, which are designated as a traditional craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Growing up in an environment where he was exposed to Hanko stamps from an early age, he entered the Kanagawa Prefectural Seal Engraving Vocational and Technical School and the research department of the local training school in order to succeed the family business. He studied under the renowned seal engraver Kazunari Futaba to broaden his knowledge and skills to a greater depth.

Having won numerous awards, most notably the “National Technical Grand Prix,” he has been featured in various media outlets.
