Yamaju Seishi

山十製紙

“Nishijima Washi”, or handmade Japanese paper, is a traditional craft of Minobu Town that dates back to the Warring States Period (15th – 17th century). For 400 years, craftsmen have been passing down the unparalleled techniques for making Nishijima washi paper, which allows for distinctive interactions with the sumi /ink by creating subtle blotting, smooth-brush strokes and clear black coloration. Yamaju Seishi is a long-established paper mill that has been making washi for 120 years in Nishijima.

By acquiring patented technique, we are committed to making handmade washi paper while reducing the burden on craftsmen. We manufacture and sell Gasen-shi paper for calligraphy and washi paper for Japanese-style painting and photography. We also offer hands-on activities to experience traditional washi paper making, as well as factory tours to see first-hand how washi paper is made.
